Two weeks before my sons were killed by a drunk driver, my oldest boy Brett lost his pet snail. Rodger Snail died, leaving my 11 year old to deal with grief for the first time in his life. As we stood around Rodger Snail's grave, both of my boys shed tears of pain.
Brett: Momma it hurts soooo bad!
Me: I know baby, I'm sorry.
Brett:(crying his eyes out) Don't be sorry momma, it don't hurt so bad unless Rodger Snail was so good.
Me: *speechless*
Brett: I'm glad it hurts so bad....now I know how to tell the good ones from the bad.
Me: How?
Brett: Cuz if it's gonna hurt this bad when they die, then you know it's worth it to know them when they live. Some pains are good momma....
Cyli, what wise and beautiful sons... I promise to keep that lesson in mind always. I'm very sorry they were taken from you. that should never have happened...
Aw Jodi, thank you. But I promise, it really is okay (now) that my sons died. Death is a hard thing for all of us (I think) and as long as you can always see that while yes, it hurts to lose someone you love, you never really lose them...it really becomes Okay - someday.
I know your hurting, you and your family. I know there may not ever be any answers to the question of "Why?" But never let the act of death itself, steal from you why it hurts so bad. It hurts so bad because your recently passed on loved ones were that good. Let the good be the parts of them you carry with you. It helps!
