Then and Now: Episode 45 The Sweet Sound That Calls The Young Sailors

I should make up a new rule. Any chance I have to include Kermit the Frog in a post, I'm going to use it. He's one of my favorite things ever.

Kermit The Frog

Look at him, how can you not be uncheered by the sight of him. I desperately want the Jim Henson Think Different Apple poster. It's $300. I want it anyway. Amelia wants me to have it too.
Kermit The Frog - Rainbow Connection

I heard this version on a Coverville podcast, and it was just the excuse I needed to include some Kermit on my blog. Because, you know, of the new rule.

Then and Now: Episode 44 Moves Like a Cat

This is one of those entries that is run entirely by the cover version of the song, not the original. Not the hugest Motley Crue fan. I was more 120 Minutes than Headbangers Ball. But if this song makes you want to break out the spandex and hold a lighter up to your kohl eyeliner, than more power to ya. Let your freak flag fly, baby.
Motley Crue - Looks That Kill

I love Shivaree. I once came up with a book idea based entirely on Goodnight Moon, but I'm sure I'm not the first. I was so excited when the iTunes alerts sent me a message that they had a new album, Tainted Love: Matting Calls and Fight Songs. And imagine my delight when I saw it was an album of covers! Some obscure and lesser known songs, which only makes it more enjoyable in my opinion. Here is one of those rare instances when the cover improves upon the original, but that's really because it's more to my taste. I would like to point out to my husband that it does not break his cardinal cover song rule of "Don't Change The Pronoun." as well.
Shivaree - Looks That Kill

PS. I had a hard time picking which song from the album to use, so in the next couple of weeks, expect to see another one. It's all I can do to not post another one now, it was that close.

Then and Now: Episode 43 Thanks for Reminding Me, River

Everybody has a list of those songs. Songs that, no matter how many times you hear them, you will never get tired of them. It's usually a pretty short list, because few songs can stand up to that. "Into the Mystic" by Van Morrison; "When You Wish Upon A Star" by Pinochio; those are a couple of mine. But this song is the number one song on that short list. I've loved it since the album came out. I loved it before Say Anything, although that movie made me love it more. I went through two cassette tapes of "So" and purposely made it the very first CD I purchased for this song. And the one time I saw Peter Gabriel in concert, I think my heart stopped beating when they played this song. Not to over romanticize it or anything.

In Your Eyes - Peter Gabriel

This is another track from the High School Reunion CD I played for you a couple of weeks ago. I'm not overly familiar with Lori McKenna, but she seems to have pretty high ratings on her albums on the iTunes music store. Sorta alt country it looks like. Check her out.

Then and Now: Episode 42 Good Times For a Change

The other day, Wil came home from work in shock. One of the young tech geeks he worked with did not know who The Smiths were. Or are. Naturally, he sat right down and made a cd of his favorite Smith songs. It's important to educate the youth of today, in the emo of yesterday. This is my favorite Smiths song.

Please Please Please Let Me Get What I Want - The Smiths

People ask me all the time if I am familiar with Coverville. The answer is yes, I often steal from it. Hee. I do get some ideas, but often I use it as a starting point. For example, I learned about this album of covers from the Pixies Cover Story episode. High School Reunion is a tribute to the music from 80's movies, the John Hughes oeuvre and such. I plan to feature more songs from it in upcoming weeks. Because 80's covers are my FAVORITE.

Then and Now: Episode 41 Believe the Magic of Our Size

Louise and her boyfriend came up for an impromptu visit recently. While exploring Vancouver, she wanted to find a cd store so she could be some Amy Winehouse for the drive home. So, this week's Then and Now was chosen in her honor. I simply found a song that Amy Winehouse has covered.

Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow - The Shirells

So this cover comes from the soundtrack to Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason: A movie that TBS has recently played 9 times a day for three weeks straight. Why do they do that? In a land of tivos do we need to be THAT sure that everyone gets a chance to see it? It's a sweet song, sure. But it's no Rehab. A lot of people have covered it. But like I said, this one I chose in honor of Louis's visit. So we'll make this an opportunity to urge you to check out the more Amy Winehouse.

Then and Now: Episode 40 No One Can Tell Us We're Wrong

Man, Sundays really throw me. Around here, our Sunday - for the rest of the month - is Friday. So I tend to forget when it's Sunday. I went to some stores yesterday at 10:15, only to find them closed. They don't open until 11 on Sundays.

Anyhoo, I remember the video for this song. Who doesn't love a prostitute dance scene? Almost better than a zombie dance scene. Because of the runaway theme of the video, I thought this song was the big anthem in Legend of Billy Jean, staring Helen Slater and Christian Slater (no relation). Turns out, that was Pat Benetar's Invincible.

Love is a Battlefield - Pat Benetar

Jann Arden is Canadian, I hear about her from time to time on the television. I knew who she was before I moved here, they played her on The Mountain. But she's not as "popular" 'round here as Nelly Furtado. Nelly Furtado! Nelly Furtado! That's all I hear about. Nelly, Nelly, Nelly! The first time I heard this cover, I was unsure, but on the second listening, I grew to really like it. It's from an album Jann did of covers, and maybe I'll feature another one soon.

Love is a Battlefield - Jann Arden

Then and Now: Episode 39 The Chocolate Bunny Edition

I got to see Mr. Moon today, which was awesome, because I haven't seen him in a long while and he ROCKS. He was telling me, recently, about his vacation to Hawaii. Now that he was back, he decided to make some changes in his life. #1, he wasn't going to watch or read the news anymore. He didn't need the doom and gloom. And #2 he's going to dance wherever and whenever he wants. WHENEVER HE WANTS! I said that sounded like a great idea, so this Then and Now is dedicated to Mr. Moon. I assume he means to dance by himself if he so desires.

Dancing With Myself - Billy Idol

I really like this cover. I have some other songs covered by Nouvelle Vague, which I will feature in upcoming months.

Dancing With Myself - Nouvelle Vague.

Then and Now: Episode 38 We 'bout to throw down. You know what to do.

I told myself that once I had moved, I would be a better blogger. And that I would return to a couple regular features I used to have, Then and Now Sundays and 50 Word Fiction Fridays, specifically. So, away we go.

Cameo... he used to wear the cod piece, correct? I'm thinking of the right guy, aren't I? I'm fairly certain I am. I'd look it up, but I don't want to risk being wrong and missing the chance to talk about cod pieces. I think we should bring them back. They are the great equalizer, are they not? No need to spend lots of money on sports cars, fancy boats, speedy motorcycles to compensate for your short comings, boys. Everyone looks studly in a cod piece.

Word Up - Cameo

I've been holding on to this cover for a while. I believe I got it from Louise. She heard it on a tv show. Probably one of the CSI's or Law and Orders. I like it. To be honest, I'm a little rusty at the Then and Now's and I can't think of anything to say except, wow... this is an interesting cover. Oh pretty ladies around the world, I've got a weird thing to show you.

Don't worry, I'm sure I'll get back into the swing of things.

Word Up - Willis

Then and Now: Episode 37 You can just keep your sexy to yourself, kiddo.

You know, until I was preparing this Then and Now, I had never really listened to this entire song. I'd seen bits and pieces of the video on the television. And I knew enough about it to think it was funny when Al Gore said he was bringing the sexy back. (You know, every time I see Al on a talk show recently, talking about the environment, he's dressed like Johnny Cash, all in black. And he's more relaxed than he used to be. Funnier. He may not be wrong, he may be brining the sexy back. I dig Al Gore.) But, I never really listened to this whole song. Until now. My god, I hate pop music sometimes. Enough said?

Sexy Back - Justin Timberlake

One of the music blogs a read, and a great source for cover tunes, is My Old Kentucky Blog. A few days ago, they published a bunch of cover tunes by an independent artist named James Eric Laczkowski. As soon as I heard his acoustic version of Sexy Back, I knew I had to use it. It's too much fun. Covering it acoustically is brilliant. Strip out all the samples and beats and maybe there really is a story of a guy who will be your slave, and let you whip him if he misbehaves. Hee!

Sexy Back - James Eric Laczkowski.

Then and Now: Episode 36 Did you forgot the magnetism of Robin Zander, or the charisma of Rick Nielsen?

Is it guilty pleasure to love Cheap Trick? I don't think so, Styx maybe, but Cheap Trick is awesome. I stand by the Trick. Someday, I'll post some covers of "Surrender" which is one of my favorite songs. Or have I already? I get so confused. Anyway, it's the truth, I'd love you guys to love me.

I Want You To Want Me - Cheap Trick.

Back when Wicked Game came out, it was my most reverent wish to marry Chris Isaak. Or at least smooch him a lot. I've seen him in concert so many times. Not just because of the smoochability factor, but because he puts on the best show. If I get ever get married, and I'm rich, do you think I could hire him to play my wedding? And if so, do you think I could get a smooch? For old time's sake?

Then and Now: Episode 35 You'll Never Need to Doubt It

I have friends who consider the Beach Boys' Pet Sounds to be genius. And Mr. Moon once told me that "God Only Knows" and "Wouldn't it be Nice?" are two of the most romantic songs a boy could email a girl. He's probably right. In a break from tradition, I'm not going to talk about each version, but rather just give 'em to you to enjoy.

Then and Now: Episode 35 Lighting Our Candles in a Daze

Back when this album was out, I was in a bad roommate situation. I was living with my best friend. We were not getting along, and she resented the fact that she felt that she had to invite me to do anything she did, socially. Because we had the some friends. She did her best to exclude me as often as possible, even if it just meant treating me coldly when we were in a social situation. Why on earth would a best friend treat you that way? It hardly matters, we haven't been any type of friends in many many years.

During this time, I started to discover all the ways in which we differed, coveted these things. Music was one. She had an increasing interest in country music. And I discovered Nirvana and Pearl Jam. Nevermind and Ten, I used to play them loud, especially the angry songs. (But I still enjoyed a good Lyle Lovett song.)

Lithium - Nirvana

I like the Brady Family feeling to the beginning of this cover. I'm so happy... it's a sunshine day... I'm quite insane. Yay!

Lithium - The Polyphonic Spree

Then and Now: Episode 34 No Church on Time, Because it Terrifies Me

Hello from Victoria, where I am enjoying my own modern love... Wil and I met on line, that's modern... right? Anyway, I like this song. Why I chose it explained below.

Modern Love - David Bowie

My latest favorite show, which I started watching in reruns this summer, is Grey's Anatomy. One of my favorite things about this show is Sandra Oh, whom I've loved since Double Happiness. But my 2nd favorite thing is the music. They play some great music on this show. I am not sure what episode I was watching... and it took me a minute to even recognize where I had heard this song before, it was so different. The band has the song for download on their website - yay! Love that! So go check them out, for being so friendly and generous.

My 3rd favorite thing about the show is George.

Modern Love - The Last Town Chorus

Then and Now: Episode 33 The Happy Birthday, Blog Episode

Happy Birthday, Blog! Now you are 4 years old. In a year, you'll start school, but for now, enjoy your preschool years. While you can. I've saved up a bunch of Sesame Street on the tivo for you, and afterwards we can have cake!

So, for my blog's birthday, I've decided to do a Then and Now that features one of my favorites, The Eels. In a slightly different format this time, as I don't have much to say about the original, except that I've always thought it was a very sweet song. And I chose it simply because the Eels covered it. Sometimes, it works like that.

Thanks everyone for reading my little blog. I can't help falling in love with all of you. Honest. Yes... even you!

Then and Now: Episode 32 This is just one of those games that we play

Yesterday was the most beautiful day. It was a Jodi kinda day. Mid 60's and raining. Pru and I sat and listened to it rain, listened to the laundry cycle it's way through wash and dry, and watched a marathon of What Not to Wear. We like to scare ourselves that way. I do believe Stacy could kick all of our asses at once. In 4" stilettos. She rules.

Anyhoo, on to this week's song.

Hold Me Now - Thompson Twins

I'm late with the T&N because I have been trying to find a particular song I heard on a podcast. I've been looking everywhere, and could not find it. It is sung by Stephanie Casey, who sings in a band Fall of Snow, but this is some of her solo work. However, damned if I can find any info about her solo work. So what we have here is basically the digital equivalent of recording a song off the radio. I thought it was pretty and wanted to play it for you. In the mean, here is the link to her band's website.

Then and Now: Episode 30 Dig, if you will, a blog post

You know, some day I might do an über Then and Now of Prince songs. I find the most interesting covers of his stuff. Heck, we could do one just on covers from Purple Rain. I think that movies is 2nd in number of times I saw in a movie theatre. DVD's, tv, video doesn't count. We are talking in a movie theatre. The first is Grease. And I am not counting all the movies I saw over and over while working at a movie theatre.

When Doves Cry - Prince

Last time we featured a song from my Like a Version cd of covers. We are going to do that again this week. This cover, by Damien Rice, is why I bought the cd in the first place, although it turned out to be a treasure trove of interesting cover goodness. But this song... this is la cerise sur un parfait de la qualité

Then and Now: Episode 29 Damn right it's better than yours

The first time I heard this song, I knew it sucked. But it just continued on it's popularity. I never in a million years thought I would ever feature it on a Then and Now, but I forgot something. People love to cover incredibly lame, yet freakishly popular, pop songs. I cannot tell you how many covers of "Hit Me Baby One More Time" there are out there. So.. without further ado, but absolutely no fanfare....

Milkshake - Kelis

In working on River's cover cd [which is finally finished and should be shipped this week, River] I found this cool cd from an Australian radio show called Like A Version [damn, I wish I had thought of that title] , that featured a bunch of really cool covers. I'm sure I will feature many of them in the next couple of weeks. This one cracked me up the most. Just the fact that someone had covered this song..... this was before I knew there were so many covers of this song.

Milkshake - The Pictures

Then and Now: Episode 28 You'll be warm in my coat

I think this is a catchy tune. I have very vague memories of my older brother trying to use my singing this song against me, by telling my father and stepmother. A kind of "Oh yeah? Well, do you know what kind of music your DAUGHTER is listening to?" type of distraction technique, including the lyrics to this song and also John Cougar's Hurt So Good. I don't remember it working real well for him.

Never Say Never - Romeo Void

I've been working a cd of cover songs for River Selkie, and one evening, Mr. Moon was helping me by sending me some good ones.
jodi: more people should cover Never Say Never
mr. moon: there's not been a truer statement around the world in the past hour
jodi: THANK YOU!
mr. moon: mark it - move on to the next hour
mr. moon: we gotta mark! recorded!

Never Say Never - Queens of the Stone Age

Then and Now: Episode 27 Big Big Love

I've been keeping this song in the back of my mind, for a while, as a possible T&N. Pretty much everyone I know, in my peer group, loves the Pixies. LOOOOVES the Pixies. I wanted to use this song, in particular, because it's the song a 15 year old Louise heard in some Scottish dance club that made her an instant Pixies fan.

Sunday, Louise, Tessa, KK and I went to see LoudQuietLoud at the SIFF. So it seemed like a good time to do a Pixies Then and Now. By the way, if you love the Pixies, Frank Black, or even music in general, it's a very good film. Playing at a film festival near you!

Gigantic - Pixies

Wil, who knows everything about Frank Black and the Pixies, gave this song to me. I think it's particularly delightful the way they sing "gig-antic."

Gigantic - Wakusei

And the Reel Big Fish? Well, that's just for me, because they make me happy.

Then and Now: Episode 26 You Take the Weight Off of Me

Ever since I got back from the King Dork book signing, with music, I've been enjoying the MTX playlist in my iTunes. So today's Then and Now comes out of that. It's a song I've been signing along with for years. When I told Mr. Moon I was going to use this song, his reply was "KiKi Deeeeeee!"
Indeed.

Don't Go Breaking My Heart - Elton John and KiKi Dee

I sincerely hope that Dr. Frank someday posts the delightful "Cingular Wireless Song" he played at the book signing. I think anyone with a cell phone... or cable... or regular phone... or anything that has required a phone call to customer service, would enjoy it. I wish I could tell you who was signing this song with Dr. Frank, but I couldn't find that information. If I had only known I was going to do this, I could have asked ... but I would have been too shy anyway.

Don't Go Breakin' My Heart - Mr. T Experience

Then and Now: Episode 25 A place that nobody dared to go.

Seriously, I doubt anyone has dared to go here, in a while. Note: at the time of actual blog post, the audioblog control buttons seem to be coming and going. You may not see the controls to play the songs, just give it a minute, they should come back.

I have a guilty pleasure... actually, I have several, but let's just focus on this one. And, to be honest, I don't think I feel all that guilty about it. I love Xanadu. The movie, and especially the soundtrack. In fact, if pressed to criticize, I would say that the soundtracks has held up much better, over time, than the movie. But movie does have Olivia Newton John in flouncy peasant dresses, with slits up the sides, leg-warmers, and roller skates. Which is pretty damn cool. I bet that look will come back. I wanted to be Olivia Newton John, back when this movie came out. First Grease, and now she was a muse? And Gene Kelly, to boot. Dreamy! With that fabu Kenny Ortega choreography, and pizazzy costuming.... I own that movie on dvd, I'm semi-proud to say. But when it comes right down to it, it's the soundtrack that I really love. Three letters... E.L.O. 'nuff said. Jeff Lynne wrote the song, but ONJ sang it.

Xanadu - Olivia Newton John

So, never in my wildest dreams did I think I would be able to use Xanadu as a Then and Now. But as it turns out, many many people have covered this song. I chose my favorite. I think it has the appropriate cheese factor to compliment the original source - the movie, and do justice to the song itself. Plus, it's snappy.

Xanadu - The Lounge-O-Leers

Now that I'm here, now that you're near... in Xan-A-Dooooo!

Then and Now: Episode 24 A Very Special Episode.

This Then and Now is brought to you by the book I am currently reading - King Dork by Frank Portman. aka: Dr. Frank

Dr. Frank is the lead singer of a band I like very much, The Mr. T Experience, aka: MTX. He also rights a blog I read regularly. This is his first book, and it's wonderful. Funny. Touching. And chock full of rock - n -roll. I'm only a third of the way through, so I am going to use the blurb to tell you what it's about.

Tom Henderson (a.k.a. King Dork, Chi-mo, Hender-fag, and Sheepie) is a typical American high school loser until he discovers the book, The Catcher in the Rye, that will change the world as he knows it. When Tom discovers his deceased father’s copy of the Salinger classic, he finds himself in the middle of several interlocking conspiracies and at least half a dozen mysteries involving dead people, naked people, fake people, ESP, blood, a secret code, guitars, monks, witchcraft, the Bible, girls, the Crusades, a devil head, and rock and roll. And it all looks like it’s just the tip of a very odd iceberg of clues that may very well unravel the puzzle of his father’s death and–oddly–reveal the secret to attracting semihot girls.
Being in a band could possibly be the secret to the girl thing–but good luck finding a drummer who can count to four.

Music plays a big part of the book, especially rock and bubblegum pop from the 70's. Which naturally I love, since that music is from my childhood. I had to dig out Sweet's Desolation Boulevard the other day, and listen to it loud, after reading the first few chapters. How can I not love a book that specifically mentions the importance of a song like Wig Wam Bam?

Wig Wam Bam - Sweet

Sometimes it feels like cheating to use the Donnas in a Then and Now, they've covered plenty of songs. But extra special chocolate chip fudgey props to them for covering this one! Now if I could only get someone to cover Spark's Eaten by the Monster of Love.

Wig Wam Bam - The Donnas

Then and Now: Episode 23 Who's in the Middle of Something

Ok, I'm taking a brief break from the Sims 2.

I've always thought this was one of your more romantic songs.. not overly mushy.. seems honestly expressed... I give it a thumbs up.

Maybe I'm Amazed - Paul McCartney

So, maybe everyone already knows about this song, because it was on the O.C. I don't watch the O.C. I'm not even sure what it's about, except it has pretty people on it... I've seen the commercials. But I love Jem, and I love this version of the song. So, I'm going to ignore the origin, and say it's a Good Song.

Maybe I'm Amazed - Jem

Then and Now: Episode 22 featuring Screamin' Jodi

This week's Then and Now is brought to you by a Belly Dancing show I went to a week or so ago, with KK. I would just like to say how much I love this song. If I had a son, I'd name him Screamin'. But his middle name would not be Jay, it would be ... Henry or Frank. Screamin' Frank... my boy.

I've Put a Spell On You - Screamin' Jay Hawkins

At the belly dance show KK and I went to, someone did a hip-hip infusion belly dance to this song, and it was pretty amazing. There were several women on stage, and they were dancing in a mostly belly vein. And then there was a male dancer with them, who was dancing in a mostly hip-hip vein. The song captured my attention, and I knew I'd use it for a Then and Now as soon as I could find it.

Then and Now: Episode 21 with Feelings.. whoa whoa whoa Feeeeeelings!

How did I come across this episodes covers? I can't remember. But the original song is pretty fabulous. It's the impeccable Nina Simone. This song was featured on the second "Six Feet Under" soundtrack, which is a disc I enjoy a lot. It also features Imogen Heap singing "I'm a lonely little petunia." Can't beat that.

Feeling Good - Nina Simone

You know, I picked this song to use, and this particular cover, because it gave me the perfect excuse to buy another Eels album. No, not just the one song, I needed to buy the entire album. I just did, ok? It's probably been a couple of weeks since I mentioned how much I love the Eels, so let me do so now. I love love love them.

Feeling Good - Eels

You get a bonus 3rd track simply because I love a crooner. Also, I love Michael Bublé's last name. His last name is pretty much "bubble." Hey... do you think that kids at school called him "BoobaGAY"? They probably did. Kids can be so cruel.

Feeling Good - Michael Bublé

Then and Now: Episode 20 Because I know you like dancing with me.

Officially, I am looking for the motivation to clean. I have company coming next weekend and I will have the best housecleaning intentions right up until they get here. I find Reel Big Fish is good for that. The poppy, peppy music with happy horn, it's hard to sit still when I've got the volume turned up. I know they have lots of cover songs, so I thought I would feature them today. The one I found, however, was a surprise, featuring naughty rocker babe, Lita Ford. Oh, how many Saturday nights did I spend, in the 80's, going out on Saturday nights to get laid, only to end up getting in a fight? Rhetorical.

Kiss Me Deadly - Lita Ford

I truly do believe that almost any song is improved by a peppy horn section. I've saved some other Reel Big Fish 80's covers for later. Because I know what I like...

Then and Now: Episode 19 The Handy Capable Episode

I came across the cover version of this song, and it was a no brainer that I would need to use it.. it's Frank Black. I would need to use it for William's sake, if nothing else. However, I found out the James Taylor version I am familiar with is not the original. The song was originally done in 1960 by Jimmy "Handy Man" Jones. I have to say, I prefer it to the JT version.

Handy Man - Jimmy Jones

Here is the James Taylor version for comparison. I'm not sure he's really all that handy.

But if you ask me, the handiest sounding man of all is definitely Frank. I think I would call him.

Then and Now: Episode 18 Middle Me

I don't think I could explain the twisted path I take to find the Then and Now songs, all I know is it's more difficult when I try to find them. It's best just to stumble over them. Happily, while tripping on this week's, I found next week's as well. And it's a 3-fer.

More than one person has expressed shock at my lack of familiarity with Leonard Cohen. With the exception of "First We Take Manhattan" and "I'm Your Man" I'm not well schooled in his music. I'm waiting for someone to be my Leonard Cohen sensei, I guess. But, this song caught my eye, namely because, well, Suzanne is my middle name.

Suzanne - Leonard Cohen

First of all, you should know, many many people have covered this song. But when I came across this particular one, it was a no brainer. This man is one of my favorite musicians. Of all time. Ever. And this cover is amazing. But I would expect nothing less from Peter.

Suzanne - Peter Gabriel

Then and Now: Episode 17 A Grnch Christmas Triple Crwon

You know, nothing is every going to beat the original. It's a classic. Let's enjoy it now, shall we?
You're a Mean One, Mr. Grinch - Thurl Ravenscroft

Ok, first of all, how cool is that name? Thurl Ravenscroft? I am so going to name my next male sim Thurl Ravenscroft. Now, if you are worried, I'll set your mind at ease right now. There is no Jim Carrey version of this song in this episode of Then and Now. Oh hell, no. There are actually quit a few covers of this song, but I narrowed it down to two that I thought were fun. Or different. This next version is one I've been hearing on a local radio station for a few years now. I think it's cool, hip and jazzy. Tell me what you think.
You're a Mean One, Mr. Grinch - Deanna Kirk

The last one comes from my favorite new Christmas album this year, A Christmas Spanking, by the Asylum Street Spankers. You might remember them as the geniuses that brought us the monkey song that so delighted me oh those many months ago.
You're a Mean One, Mr. Grinch - Asylum Street Spankers

All in all, it could have been worse, kids. I could have decided to use all my many versions of "Santa Baby"

Then and Now: Episode 16 Three Times the Charm

Today's Then and Now, which is another 3fer, comes from my desire to listen to a Beatles song, this morning, sung by someone else. As per usual, when it comes to the Beatles. However, this actually one of the songs done by the band, themselves, I like. I've heard musicy people say that their strength was in their song writing, not their musicianship. Maybe this is why I like Beatles covers?

Across the Universe - The Beatles

When I was researching which Beatle album this song came from, etc., I found that a lot of people have redone this song. David Bowie, Built to Spill, and this version, which I included for fun.

Across the Universe - Rufus Wainright
