Then and Now: Episode 22 featuring Screamin’ Jodi

This week’s Then and Now is brought to you by a Belly Dancing show I went to a week or so ago, with KK. I would just like to say how much I love this song. If I had a son, I’d name him Screamin’. But his middle name would not be Jay, it would be … Henry or Frank. Screamin’ Frank… my boy.

I’ve Put a Spell On You – Screamin’ Jay Hawkins

At the belly dance show KK and I went to, someone did a hip-hip infusion belly dance to this song, and it was pretty amazing. There were several women on stage, and they were dancing in a mostly belly vein. And then there was a male dancer with them, who was dancing in a mostly hip-hip vein. The song captured my attention, and I knew I’d use it for a Then and Now as soon as I could find it.

  1. Perry says:

There are so many versions of this tune that it is really hard to pick a favourite. I like the Nina Simone version and the CCR version, whilst the Dionysos and Marilyn Manson ones make me cringe. Speaking of kids, many it appears are first introduced to the tune by the film Hocus Pocus where Bette Midler and crew do an upbeat version. Sadly it was not on the Sound Track (which is in itself very rare) and othrwise not released.
I must say, so far, your taste in music has been brilliant Jodi!

  2. That’s a great cover! I on the other hand LOVE Marilyn Manson’s cover of said Greatest Song Ever on the Lost Highway soundtrack…though it’d be harder to hip-hip or belly to it.
