Whoops. Yesterday was Sunday, wasn’t it? Today is actually Monday. I gets all confused when I have the long weekends. Ok, so I am late, and don’t think I don’t know that this will go down on my permanent record. To make up for it, I am picking a song based solely on the fact that it ROCKS! I don’t care about the cover version. I just really want to hear this song. You know, this is another song that I would cover if I became a rock n’ roll goddess. I know that Jack is going to like this weeks selection.
Kiss Off – Violent Femmes
Ok, to be honest, I don’t know who Guster is, but I like their taste. And they do a fine job. I’m just happy to hear the song a second time. I think that I’ll take time to listen to their other stuff.

V. Cool – but you know that permanent record is from kiss off:-)
You’re right that this Guster has great taste, whoever they are. But I think their version kind of sucks; I mean, there’s nothing wrong with it, but they haven’t really added anything to make it their own. They’ve given the song the “Great Big Sea” treatment: taken a rocking song and sucked a bit of the life out of it, boringizing it like Great Big Sea did with “I go blind”. Hootie and the Blowfish gave the GBS treatment to “End of the world as we know it” in the same way. We need more covers like “All along the watchtower”, that take a great song and make it into a totally new song that is still great.
Jesus I’m preachy first thing in the morning.
I did, however, really enjoy the cover of “good girls don’t” that you posted a while back. Where do you find this stuff?
It just so happens that “Kiss Off” is my favorite Violent Femmes song! It is also wildy appropriate for my mood today. It’s like you have BSP! (Blog Sensory Perception)
Ahhhhh yeah! One of my most favoritist songs ever! I knew as soon as I saw the entry title, and I even went so far as to open up a second window, to comment, so as not to interupt the song. =)
Well, Jodi who is not me [just to make sure people don’t think I am talking to myself] I agree with you about the cover. It’s pretty much blah. In this case, I was definitely just catering to my desire to post the orig. As to where I find them, sometimes people point them out to me. Often it’s by mistake. I found the Chubbies because I typed in the song in the iTunes music store. And then I said “awwww yeah…. that’s a cover I can respect!”
Christine, someday, when I come down south to see you and eat your food, we’ll play this song really loud and scream along to it. It was one of my favorite moments of the concert last month.
And, Marie, I knew that… and so I posted it in honor of YOUR BIRTHDAY!! I heart you Romy! I hope this year kicks last year’s ass, I know it will.
An early birthday present? WHOO HOO!
Oh, and, did I happen to mention that I’m impressed? =)
Fuckin’-A. Nothing like the Femmes to allow me to actually sing without having to worry about perfect pitch 🙂 I do believe anyone can sing a Femmes tune.
